Hi folks,

Another in the series of randomly occurring bulletins from
realprogrammers.com! I hope everyone's well. You're receiving this as
someone who's being hosted here; the first section is important to
web users.

  * Are you using PHP or mod_perl? IMPORTANT
  * Mail & webmail system upgraded
  * Check out SpamNet

Pardon the interruption. If anyone is using PHP or mod_perl please let
me know. I'm in the process of slicing and dicing the server configs to
keep Apache's memory use under control, and at the same time improve
responsiveness. This won't generate any downtime beyond a few seconds.
The switchover is being test staged on a backup machine as we speak.

(Unless you *know* you're using mod_perl you probably aren't -- .cgi is
by default running in its own process.)

** [if you're in a hurry, feel free to ignore the rest] **

In other news for those that have mail pass through realprogrammers.com:

As some of you may have noticed, the spammers have stepped up their
operations in recent months, and are some engaging in some really quite
sophisticated techniques. In the ongoing arms race I have upgraded the
filters here which includes SpamAssassin's new Bayesian filtering. It
automatically trains itself to detect spam so will take a little time to
"bed in". I'd be interested to hear feedback.

For those using webmail, I have upgraded that too. I haven't had the
opportunity to test thoroughly -- let me know if you spot any problems.

If you're using Outlook, you might like to consider SpamNet:
http://www.cloudmark.com/products/spamnet/ - if spam gets through you
can "delete it as spam" and the global community using SpamNet benefits.
The filter here at realprogrammers.com uses it too so you actually
contribute back to the system as well.

realprogrammers.com will have filtered its 50,000th spam in a few
days time.

Cheers, Paul
